Media Extender
The MCE Extenders are just that, extend MCE, so they do not have Media Center built in, and they cannot operate independently of a Windows Media Center Computer. MCE Extenders are based on Windows CE. MCEX will connect to non-MCE units. * The codec support (extender versus MCE host) is yet TBD.

Some control, some do nothing at all, some do navigation, some do not support typing (as in the keyboard and the 360 in MCE eXtender mode), and some support programming. It is a nightmare. Help me understand media extenders and windows home servers?
You cannot add codecs, you will need to convert your videos into a format that the extender can support such as WMV 9. Can the MCE 2005 / extender software do that or the only way is to get MediaEncoder software? Note: MediaEncoder is kind of painfull to use for most computers users, plus its not a speedy process.

Original Xbox as MCE extender
Yeah, DRM would eventually be a problem on both systems, and I'm hoping that users vote with their wallets and not support such draconian DRM. The Xbox 360 is of course able to act as a Media Center Extender, indeed at the moment it is effectively the ONLY such device since the others have all been discontinued
